Originally built for one of the grand old theatre companies of New York, the Lambs Club was designed in 1905 by Stanford White, partner in the acclaimed architecture firm of McKim, Mead and White who designed the Old Pennsylvania Station and Boston Public Library Buildings. WQB Architecture, the Architect of Record, with interior design by The Office of Thierry Despont, was tasked with overseeing the complete renovation and architectural redesign of the building to create a magnificent and contextual 5-star boutique hotel in the heart of Time’s Square. The hotel is the jewel in the crown of the Hampshire Hotel franchise. New construction included the rehabilitation and addition to the existing landmarked façade, a four-story penthouse addition (which does not affect street side views of the structure), and a grand two-story atrium in the second floor lounge. The hotel includes a signature Geoffrey Zakarian restaurant, health spa, conference rooms, and banquet facilities in the basement. Construction was completed in 2010.
China Central Place, known as the Hua Mao Zhong Xin, opened in 2007. The 1,000,000 m2 mixed use complex is located in Beijing’s CBD. Designed by the international architecture firm of Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates (KPF), the master plan includes residential, retail, two hotels operated by Ritz Carlton and JW Marriott, and the offices of 70 industry-leading multinationals, including Deutsche Bank. The site is located on Chang’an Boulevard, Beijing’s primary east-west axis. The architecture of China Central Place was designed by KPF as a striking composition of diagonally faceted glass volumes whose appearance is softened at the lowest five stories by terra cotta screens. Within the site, the component buildings define two major public parks of over two hectares each. OPC built up a team to manage sales, planning, customer service and research to position and assure adherence to the master plan and market suitability. In addition, it set up the successful sales systems, and participated in bringing on board.
WQB/OPC provided a Master Plan and brand development studies for the real estate subsidiary of King Deer – a leading fashion company. The total area of the project will be 374 hectares and there will be a variety of housing types, Town Center and community services for over 43,000 people with over 20 million square feet of construction. The land, Hospitality currently an agricultural area near the motorway between Beijing and Tianjin, will become a “Weekend Resort” which will include an Outlet Mall, Regional Entertainment Center, Five Star Conference Hotel, Waterpark Hotel, a Boutique Spa Hotel with a 2 acre arboretum and a variety of other recreational and employment opportunities for both the community residents and vacationers from the surrounding areas. The Town Center and the Resort areas will be connected by common open spaces which also provide park‐like amenities for the housing development areas. The project is currently in the approval process and expects to commence construction in the Summer of 2012.
A local development company, with King Deer, a national fashion company as their partner, has been selected to develop the first iconic commercial project in the newly relocated Central Business District (CBD) of Hohhot, the capital of Inner Mongolia. A design concept using faceted “crystals” was developed to reflect the local climate and the new economic culture related to coal and mineral resources. The project will be 4 million square feet and includes office buildings, a regional shopping/ entertainment mall, a 5 Star Hotel and Conference Center, 3 luxury residential towers and 3 levels of underground parking. The project is currently in the approval phase and is scheduled to start construction in the summer of 2012.
